Seven Toronto artists--Sara Angelucci, Barbara Astman, Adam David Brown, Michelle Gay, Ido Govrin, Vid Ingelevics, Jon Sasaki--have been invited to create new works responding to the context and history of the Koffler Gallery space, formerly the library of the school at 180 Shaw Street. Exploring the notion of the school library as a place of learning, social interaction and enchantment, the artists articulate singular ways of engagement with the site with a range of mixed media, sound and new technology.

Koffler Gallery – Studio 105, 180 Shaw Street

From childhood to adulthood, the library sparks our imagination and fuels our creativity, shaping our individual and shared experiences of books. Beyond this universal relationship, it continues to inspire a wealth of artistic perspectives. Visual artist Adam David Brown, author and librarian Martha Baillie, and psychoanalyst and psychiatry professor Dr. David Dorenbaum explore these themes in a conversation moderated by Mona Filip, Curator of the Koffler Gallery. Preceded by an artist-led tour of the exhibition We're in the Library.

Koffler Gallery – Studio 105, 180 Shaw Street
Toronto, Ontario Canada
+ Google Map

Vancouver-based artist Adad Hannah has earned an international reputation for his video-recorded tableaux vivants that often reference art history and paradigms of museum practices. In this new body of work, Hannah shifts focus to his personal history, re-animating a “frozen moment” captured eighteen years before he was born. Positioning for the first time a family member as collaborator rather than as subject or model, Hannah pushes his practice deeper than ever into the exploration of the most popular genre of…

Vancouver/Montreal-based artist Adad Hannah has earned an international reputation for his video-recorded tableaux vivants that often reference art history and paradigms of museum practices. Staging models to hold poses for an extended time, he deconstructs the photographic image, undermining its authenticity. Drawing attention to the performance inherent within photography, he creates a space for reflection on the production of meaning. In this new body of work developed specifically for the Koffler Gallery, Hannah shifts focus to his personal history, re-animating…

The trans-disciplinary practice of Toronto artist Penelope Stewart encompasses architecture, in situ installation, sculpture, photography, drawing and print. In recent years, she has created a series of installations exploring the beehive metaphor in utopian architecture. Constructing an enfolding, monumental hive out of beeswax in the centre of the Koffler Gallery, Stewart transforms the space into a mysterious forensic ecology – loaded with overgrown floral forms, household objects and debris – coalesced into a grand still life that reminds us of…

Toronto artist Kristiina Lahde alters and re-formats ordinary objects and materials through a process of geometric re-organization in which measurement and pattern play a significant role. Envelopes, newspapers, telephone books and measuring tapes have an overlooked potential, an internal logic that Lahde manipulates to de-familiarize them, shifting, expanding, inverting, or transforming them. Recently, she has been systematically re-formatting measuring tools, cutting and reconfiguring measuring tapes and rulers using precise measurements, geometric shapes and patterns. For her solo show at the…

Montreal-based Brazilian-Canadian artist Alexander Pilis develops a new architectural installation staging the white cube of the gallery as perception tool central to the experience of visual art. Playing with optical illusions, reflections and points of view, a series of theatrical boxes and viewfinders direct the viewer’s performance as both spectator and actor in the gesture of looking and seeing. Furthermore, a museological set-up orchestrates an exchange of ideas between a collection of perceptual objects and devices, and large-scale collage works…

January 14, 2016 @ 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Koffler Gallery – Studio 105, 180 Shaw Street
Toronto, Ontario Canada

In a poignant new painting series, Toronto artist Howard Podeswa mines the sub-terrains of fear, loss and disaster, creating an allegorical journey through somber, apocalyptic visions towards an eventual luminous outbreak. Referencing iconic works by Peter Breugel the Elder and Francisco Goya as well as contemporary images of natural cataclysms and social upheavals, Podeswa’s striking large canvases signal the collapse of old global orders, ultimately turning towards scientific ideas of the universe for the dissolution of darkness.
