Global Music in a Small World

The Small World Music Centre here at Artscape Youngplace is a unique space owned and operated by the Small World Music Society, a charitable organization founded in 1997 whose mission is to showcase global music onto the culturally diverse Toronto stage. The organization not only enriches Toronto’s already thriving culture throughout the year with innovative globally sourced sounds, but also works with both local and international artists to provide a platform to produce and showcase their work. “We’re lucky to work with some of the most celebrated artists around—from great Indian virtuosos to stars of African music. By putting them on the same festival, marketing materials, or show with recognized names, we can enhance their profile with audiences” says Executive Director Alan Davis. Through working with music, performance, and an engaging sense of community and cross-cultural connections, the organization functions as a joyous celebration of the growing diversity within Toronto. The name Small World Music “sums up pretty well what we strive to do—to being as diverse a mix as possible for global sounds to Toronto audiences. It speaks to the unifying power of music and to the diversity of the city”. Since the Small World Music Society’s foundation in 1997, the organization has hosted over 500 music events and counting, and has served as a long-standing “creative incubator” for artistic growth from musical artists from all over the globe.

The Small World Music Centre, the newest edition to the Small World Music Society, opened earlier this year in February here at Artscape Youngplace. It functions as their main performance venue, but also as a dedicated space for the Small World Music Society within the city. The Centre is an invaluable tool within their mission to promote, showcase, and facilitate growth with global artists at various points within their careers.

The Centre creates a truly intimate setting for live performances, rehearsals, workshops, as well as community gatherings centred around music. The awe inspiring space has 1000 sq. ft. of space dedicated to musical performance and features a beautiful hardwood-floor stage, professional quality staging and sound, guest seating, and state of the art technology. “Opening the Small World Centre enables us to do things that can really only happen by having one’s own space. From consolidating or educational outreach, to hosting intimate concerts by both emerging and established artists, and being able to do it in a beautiful, well outfitted space, we can enhance our offerings to audiences, artists and the community”.

The Centre regularly hosts a number of events throughout the year, but is also open to individuals to rent and host their own events in. “We’re eager to get people into the new space and experience what goes on there. People can volunteer their time, learn more about our programming, and apply as artists on our website www.smallworldmusic.com”. For individuals looking to host their events with the Small World Music Centre, feel free to contact Venue Manager Jeff Van Harmelen at jeff@smallworldmusic.com.
