Launch and Opening: SUMMER SESSIONS w/Univ of Guelph MFA thesis exhibition by Simon M Benedict

August 22, 2016 @ 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

painter project – version 4 | Simon M Benedict
August 20–27, 2016

TYPOLOGY is pleased to launch our newest initiative in support of emerging artists and curators: SUMMER SESSIONS, a program through which we are making free space and staffing support available to graduates of local and regional colleges and universities to present their thesis exhibitions in downtown Toronto. For our first session, University of Guelph MFA candidate Simon M Benedict presents his performative video installation, painter project – version 4, a playful and critical exploration of the portrayal of artists in biographical films. Appropriating pre-existing footage from films such as Frida, Pollock, and Turner, Benedict puts various biopics in dialogue with one another, following a sequence which changes every time the work is shown. Please see the exhibition webpage at www.typology.ca/exhibition/painter-project-version-4 for more information.

Exhibition Dates: August 20–27, 2017 from 12–5 pm
For this exhibition, we will be open for extended hours, 12–5 pm every day from Saturday to Saturday, August 20–27th.

Opening Reception: Monday, August 22, 2016 from 6–8 pm
The artist will be in attendance and all are welcome. This reception will coincide with the opening for Pixelation, a third floor Hallway Gallery exhibition curated by Zviko Mhakayakora from OCADU. We hope you will join us for both celebrations this evening!

About the Artist: Using pre-existing audiovisual material to create new narratives, Simon M Benedict playfully explores the myths and conventions of artistic identity in fine and popular art realms. Benedict recently completed an MFA at the University of Guelph (2016) and also holds a BFA from Concordia University (2011). His work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States and France. He currently lives and works in Guelph.

About the Summer Sessions: Through this new initiative, Simon M Benedict (and future selected master’s degree candidates) will receive free use of our exhibition and office space for one week, and staffing support for the entire seven days during public gallery hours (12–5 pm), plus other assistance, resources, and promotion of the exhibition as detailed on our Summer Sessions webpage: www.typology.ca/about/opportunities/summer-sessions

About TYPOLOGY+Critical Distance: Providing opportunities for curators and artists to mount fully realized exhibitions within a critical framework, TYPOLOGY is a not-for-profit initiative which seeks to advance curatorial inquiry and build curatorial community at the local, national, and international levels. Through a wide-ranging annual program of exhibitions supported by the production of original publications, editions, and related events, TYPOLOGY is an open platform for diverse curatorial and artistic practices and perspectives, and a forum for the exchange of ideas on exhibition-making as a way to engage and inform audiences from all walks of life.

We’re relaunching this fall with a new name and more focused mission. See our relaunch announcement at www.typology.ca/relaunch-announcement and subscribe to our blog or follow us on Facebook or Twitter for more info on our next phase as CRITICAL DISTANCE centre for curators in Toronto.
