German case binding is a book form that dates back to the 1800s. It was first adopted as a cheaper paper-covered alternative to wooden boards, and has now evolved into your favourite hardcover books today.
The cover is made as a separate flat unit before being attached to the text block with adhesives. In this workshop you will be shown how to prepare a text block – folding, cutting, hole punching and sewing. Our expert instructor will take you through the steps of preparing the flat case including creating a strong spine with card stock and book cloth.
You will be supplied with beautiful, decorative papers as end pages, and to cover boards. Case bindings are extremely strong and durable book forms that are great for writing, sketchbooks and sharing.
All participants will leave with one 8.5 x 5.5” handmade German case binding book sample as well as notes to further practice and make more books at home!
