Heather Nicol, whose new studio is at Artscape Youngplace, is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her practice includes creating new media audio-sculptures, sound and light installation works, objects, as well as independent curating. An underlying interest in communication and connection link all of these threads. Her artworks investigate desire (longings for attention, power dynamics, moments of transition) and often play with notions of beauty and femininity. Her recent curatorial projects explore site specific conditions found in underutilized transitional spaces, such as an empty warehouse and decommissioned school, with a focus on creating opportunities for interventions by artists working across a wide range of disciplines. She curated and produced Art School (dismissed) in 2010, an intervention that responded to the decommissioned TDSB property prior to it renewal by Artscape. Art School (dismissed) featured over 50 established regional artists whose practices extend into the realm of teaching.
