Announcing the 2015 Resident Teachers!

Artscape Youngplace is pleased to announce our newest roster of Resident Teachers, each hosting a fantastic slate of classes over the course of the year in the Artscape Flex Studios.  These classes encourage our community to connect, learn and create, and feature multiple artistic disciplines, skill levels, and price points. Classes will be posted on the Classes section of the website and on our Facebook page as they are available for registration up.  Check back often!

INTEGRATED CIRCUIT: Bodies and Technologies
Monthly, starting on Thursday, June 4

Zach will lead a monthly drop-in lecture series that will explore how technology is exponentially changing the way we communicate and represent ourselves. Using both popular culture and contemporary art as a lens to critically examine these changes, attendees will gain insight into an array of key topics, including cybernetics, post humanism, surveillance and online performance.

Does your child like to build gizmos, create new universes, mix up potions? Our workshop gives 8-11yr. old kids a chance to experiment with ideas and materials to design a different invention every week. Testers, prodders, investigators and experimenters welcome!

Performance Art Workshop: Between Intimacy and Architecture, Subtle and Relational Performance in Public Place
July 10 – 12, 2015

How do we listen to each other? How do we interact? How do we respond to the landscape around us? How do we engage with time and space? Cultivating attentive awareness, empathetic presence and peripheral vision, through exercises and constructed situations/performance presentations, this performance art workshop will explore the multiple and very personalized ways in which we experience and foster intimacy and connection – in ourselves, towards others, and in relation to place.

Performance Art Lab and Ensemble Improvisation

Performance Art Lab is an 8-week workshop to consider concepts involved in making performance art by engaging participants in looking at and discussing the work of various artists, active participation in simple exercises, and refining the interests of participants leading to a workshop showing.  Ensemble Improvisation is an investigation into creating a physical performance piece together.  It offers participating artists an ongoing practice to work together to see what develops from weekly movement research and skill development in group awareness, making proposals, support of initiations, elements of composition, integrating voice, and observing each other.

The Life Rescripted Academy – Rescripting Empowerment, Intimacy & Success
June 30, July 7 and July 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm

The workshops will help individuals to explore the narratives that shape their lives, and offer opportunities to rescript those narratives to transform their self-image, close relationships and careers.

Now Accepting Applications for 2015 Resident Teachers

Artscape is now accepting applications from individuals, organizations, and collectives who are interested in becoming Resident Teachers at Artscape Youngplace, a community cultural hub in the West Queen West neighbourhood. Now in our second year of our Resident Teachers program, we are looking to create new relationships with a select group of instructors and facilitators who offer unique experiences that focus on inspiring creation and learning while creating new connections in our community. Artscape is currently accepting proposals for classes taking place during the 2015 calendar year.

Business Skills for Growth is Back!

Artscape is proud to announce the Fall/Winter edition of Business Skills for Growth, its popular workshop series for independent artists and creative entrepreneurs, presented by experts across a range of business disciplines. The latest batch of Business Skills for Growth workshops include over 50 opportunities for people working on building their creative businesses, all taking place at Artscape Youngplace between October 2014 and March 2015. Take one or take them all!

The Fall/Winter series kicks off on October 20 with workshop “Co-operatives for Arts & Culture,” a two-hour primer in the co-op business model. Anyone wanting to know more about how to set up a co-op, or how co-ops work, will want to check this out. It’s being presented by Peter Cameron, a true expert in the subject, and Co-operative Development Manager with the Ontario Co-operative Association. Only $35, it’s a perfect way to figure out if the co-op model is right for your venture.

Also in October, we’ve got “Branding for Arts & Cultural Organizations,” presented by Shelley Black on the 26th. Don’t miss this workshop if your objective is to present your business in the best possible light. Shelley Black, an expert consultant, will give you all the tools you need to make your brand presence sing in a 5.5 hour in-depth workshop. Independent artists as well as arts organizations are welcome to this wide-ranging discussion.

Business Skills for Growth–a New Workshop Series

Without a doubt, learning how to financially thrive, let alone survive, ranks highly on every creative person’s priority list. As perplexing as this challenge can be, plenty of creatives are out there doing it, and doing it well.

Toronto is home to vibrant creative and cultural companies, organizations, and businesses, all fueled by creative talent and gusto. Simultaneously, the local, hand-made, indie-everything movement is flourishing only because creative minds, hearts and hands have made it so.

Enterprising creatives are making a big mark on this city – their collective actions coming together to generate increasing demand for creative products and services. As a result, opportunities for business savvy creatives abound.
